2. English2.1 mountainbike![]() © Jason Hall Bet you didn't know the National Bike Summit was going on right now. Or did you? Perhaps I'm the only one who was clued into this late in the game. Regardless, the summit is celebrating it's 10th anniversary this week and is looking to garner as many bicyclists and advocates on Capitol Hill as possible. Will you be in or around the Washington, D.C. area over the next couple days? Register on-site (since online registration is closed) and help Congress realize that the answer to energy dependence, health care and climate change is the bicycle. "In 2010, Congress and our federal agencies will be setting national targets and goals for 2020. They will be writing transportation, climate, health care, natural resources and other critical pieces of legislation that will shape our future. Bicycling must be prominently featured in these important pieces of legislation..." notes the League of American Bicyclists. Among the many sessions offered today, these two grabbed my attention right away: "Cycle Tracks to Pump Tracks - The Transportation-Recreation Connection" and "Entrepreneurial IMBA-Growing Mountain Bike Participation." A Capitol Hill rally and continental breakfast begin at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow. Speak up for cycling and let your voice be heard! Judith Arndt, a professional road cyclist for team HTC-Columbia, won her first mountain bike race a couple weekends ago. Sure, the 33-year-old former world champion has won races before—but never a mountain bike race. In fact, she'd never raced off road before the Otway Odyssey. Meaning she won the first mountain bike race she ever entered. "I really enjoyed the mountain bike race. People were really friendly. Everyone was so positive," she told Cyclingnews. I remember having those same thoughts after finishing my first mountain bike race. I remember the course being slick from the rain that fell the day before too. I even remember passing a handful of women on the course and falling mid turn on my way downhill. I remember pedaling across the finish line, fresh blood dripping from my knee. Would you believe then that I don't remember what place I came in? Maybe there's a reason. What was your first race experience like? Did you win the first mountain bike race you entered like Judith Arndt? Or do you forget, like me? My First Mountain Bike Race originally appeared on About.com Mountain Biking on Saturday, March 6th, 2010 at 16:57:35. This past weekend I had the chance to attend the Action Bicycle Open House Expo. Action is a wholesale distributor that delivers bike parts and accessories to bike shops all over the country, especially those located in the Mid-Atlantic area. Each spring, their open house provides the opportunity for dealers to meet with various manufacturers and see what new products will be available for the season ahead. I had a few hours to browse around and chat with vendors like Shimano, Saris, Kryptonite, Princeton Tec, Lizard Skins and many others. There are a lot of great new products in the works so keep checking back for new product reviews on bikes, components, and accessories! Grant money to help build singletrack, bike parks and cycling paths! Bikes Belong, a coalition that "works to put more people on bicycles more often," recently awarded $55,000 in winter grants to help fund seven projects: (Moab, Utah) - Moab Trails Alliance - Moab Canyon Path $10,000 will help to connect the paved Moab Canyon Path--also known as The Old Highway--from the Lion's Park Trail and Transit Hub with Arches National park and the mountain bike trails north of town. I rode this connector when I visited Moab a few years back and am thrilled it is going to be one step closer to completion--a truly stunning, safe way to travel around town. (Crosby, Minn.) - Cuyuna Lakes Trail Association - Cuyuna Lakes State Trail $10,000 will help to construct two sections of paved trail that will connect an elementary school, senior housing facility and community center to five miles of existing trail in Crosby, Minn. Bike path riders will be introduced to mountain biking when it's complete--the 39-mile Cuyuna Lakes State Trail will link to the Paul Bunyan Trail and an IMBA Ride Center. (Redmond, Wash.) - City of Redmond, Washington - Redmond Bike Park $10,000 will go towards building the Redmond Bike Park. The city and its partnerships with the Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance, the Cascade Bicycle Club, and local bicycle shops and supplier will design and build this park. I have a feeling it'll get used--roughly 2,450 mountain bikers live within two miles of the facility. (Cable, Wis.) - Chequamegon Area Mountain Bike Association (CAMBA) - CAMBA Singletrack $5,000 will support finishing the final phase of development in the Cable, Hayward and Seeley clusters, which will create 28 miles of uninterrupted singletrack. (Boone, NC) - Watauga County Tourism Development Authority - Rocky Knob Park Trails $5,000 will help develop a mountain bike trail system at Rocky Knob Park. As it stands, residents have to drive outside the county to access legal singletrack trails. (Middleton, Wis.) - City of Middleton, Wisconsin - Middleton Bike Park $5,000 will go towards building a bike park neighboring the city's public golf course. Middleton is hoping to make the park a key part of its master trails plan, which will allow mountain bikers to ride instead of drive to the trails. (Cincinnati, Ohio) - Ohio River Way, Inc. - Ohio River Trail $10,000 will go towards paving a portion of the Ohio River Trail, linking downtown Cincinnati to Lunken Airport. Another scenic transportation and recreation route, which will eventually connect to the popular Little Miami Scenic Trail. Six reasons you should cancel your plans this weekend and head to the North American Handmade Bicycle Show: 1. It's closer than you think. NAHBS is in Richmond, Va., this year—which is within a day's drive of half the U.S. population. 2. You'll rub elbows with the best of 'em. What could be better than chatting up the world's greatest framebuilders? 3. It counts as a cultural experience. Each bike on the showroom floor is a custom made work of art. 4. You'll get an education. Seminars include: "So you want to build bikes," "Frame finishing" and "Carbon fiber myths, facts and design" among others. 5. You'll be part of a renaissance. Champe Burnley, president of the Richmond Area Bicycling Association told the NAHBS "This marks a cycling renaissance for the Richmond area." 6. It travels. NAHBS is on the East Coast for the first time in its five-year history. Chances are it won't be next year. Really, do you even need an excuse to drool over 46,000-square feet of beautiful bikes? I didn't think so. The North American Handmade Bicycle Show will take place from February 26-28, 2010, at the Greater Richmond Convention Center. Online ticket sales are currently closed. But tickets can be purchased at the door. One day: $20 at the door; two days: $36 at the door; three days: $50 at the door; children 6-13: $5 for a one-day admission. New exhibitor list: Seven Cycles, Ted Wojcik Custom Bicycles, Poka Cycle Accessories, Six-Eleven Bicycle Co. and Sylvan Cycles, LLC. [+] A Pedi-what? ![]() © Rebecca Mayer Well, I'm back from the left coast and dying to get on my mountain bike. The warm climate in San Diego makes it super inviting to ride year-round. I can't even begin to count the number of cyclists I saw. Most impressive, though, were the amount of pedicabs in the city. These human-powered tricycles carried passengers all over--to their various hotels, the Gaslamp District, the convention center, etc.--on a for hire basis. I was more than willing to be whisked away in one, but we ended up being close enough to walk to our destinations. I think in my next life--y'know, the one where I have superhuman strength--I'm going to be a pedicab driver. Until then, I'm going for a mountain bike ride. I don't care that it's (literally) freezing here, or that I still have a foot or so of snow in my front yard or that my Pugsley is yet to be built up. It's nothing a little layering, my favorite mountain bike and a set of beefy tires can't fix. [+] San Diego Sans BikeI currently find myself 3,000 miles across the country in a climate much different than the one I left behind. It's 75 degrees and sunny here in San Diego. In the middle of February. And Weather.com tells me it's 40 degrees colder back home. Along with my sunglasses and sunscreen, I left behind my mountain bike. But that's not keeping me from dreaming about riding it. Sure, I'm here to attend a conference that makes no mention of switchbacks or singletrack in its program. But it's all I can think about. If I look real close at the mountain vista I see from my hotel window, I bet I can spot some lucky soul careening down the hillside, laughing in the face of visitors (like me) who won't get a chance to explore the epic riding that is sure to be more enjoyable than any conference. If I did have my bike, and a bit of free time, I'd hit up the Thursday night ride, a 10- to 13-mile jaunt led by Lou, a San Diego Mountain Biking Association liaison. The ride meets at 6:00 at the Hernandez Hideaway Mexican Restaurant. I didn't do the math, but I bet it's close by. In fact, I bet that "lucky soul" on the mountain would laugh at me if he knew just how close. The takeaway: If you ever find yourself in San Diego, don't forget to bring your bike! Or you'll be stuck contemplating the mountains instead of cruising over them. Like me. San Diego Sans Bike originally appeared on About.com Mountain Biking on Thursday, February 18th, 2010 at 19:44:42. Before making a reputation for himself in the professional road cycling world, Floyd Landis raced in the American mountain bike circuit. He returned to the dirt after a doping offense led to disqualification from the Tour de France. Today, the embattled cyclist is in the news once again. A French judge issued an arrest warrant for Landis in connection with a computer hacking case at a doping laboratory. According to lab director Pierre Bordry, data was stolen and altered to make it look like the lab made errors. Landis denies any involvement. "It appears to be another case of fabricated evidence by a French lab who is still upset a United States citizen believed he should have the right to face his accusers and defend himself," he told the Los Angeles Times. Do you believe Landis? Do you think anti-doping laws in professional mountain biking should be as strict and highly publicized? Arrest Warrant Issued for Floyd Landis originally appeared on About.com Mountain Biking on Tuesday, February 16th, 2010 at 14:32:08. Ever hear of the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) hut-to-hut system in New Hampshire's White Mountains? A bunch of backcountry mountain huts are separated about a day's hike apart along the Appalachian Trail, offering hospitality in areas above tree line or near mountain lakes. In summer and early fall, dinner and breakfast are included in your stay. Recently, the AMC purchased an additional 29,500-acre piece of land in Maine. With its first major purchase of 37,000 acres, this latest acquirement guarantees 650,000 acres of public conservation land from Greenville to Mt. Katahdin. In addition to managing the land for sustainable logging and public access, rumor has it that by next year, four old sporting camps that are situated about a day's travel apart will be refurbished. Unlike the system in the White Mountains, you can mountain bike from hut to hut here. Plus, they'll haul your gear for you and have it waiting in the cabin! I'm impressed...and now planning mountain biking trip in Maine next fall. How about you? [+] Winter Wheels© Justin Kline We got socked with record-breaking snowfall this year in the Philadelphia area. I'm talking over 70 inches in a few short months. In fact, two feet fell just two days ago, making it nearly impossible to ride. Don't get me wrong. I love winter and everything about the season--including snow. What others see as a nuisance, I see as beauty. And I typically take advantage of the white stuff to partake in other activities, like cross country skiing and ice climbing. But 70 inches is almost incomprehensible to me. A Pennsylvanian who's used to frolicking in about 20 inches of flurries a year. If that. This past week's blizzard motivated me to buy wheels for my Pugsley frame, which sits in a corner collecting dust at the moment. You can see a picture of it on the About.com Facebook page. To all of you who live in cold climates with loads of snow, I have a question: Do you ride a winter specific bike? 2.2 imbaThe Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) was created by Congress in 1965 and is authorized to receive $900 million annually in federal revenues from oil and gas leasing. Unfortunately, most of these funds have been diverted, meaning the LWCF has received full funding only once in its multi-decade history. Current legislation could help restore full funding the LWCF. The bills, known as S. 2747 in the Senate (Sen. Bigaman and Baucus) and H.R. 334 in the House (Cong. Rahall) deserve your support. Airborne® Bicycles recently announced a partnership with IMBA. To kick off the new relationship, Airborne is reaching out to IMBA members by giving them the first chance to become a part of its first-ever Flight Crew. Up to 10 enthusiastic riders will be selected for the Flight Crew and have the opportunity to test out new Airborne bikes, post videos of their adventures and represent Airborne® Bicycles at the upcoming Sea Otter Classic, April 15-19, in Monterey, CA. Mountain biking has been identified as one of the fastest growing outdoor recreation activities among youth (Outdoor Foundation, 2009). IMBA's trail development work in urban areas, including the Gateway Trails program, helps meet that demand. These trail systems also contribute to reducing the risk of obesity and inactivity facing today's families. IMBA recently conducted several meetings in Washington, D.C. with key congressional leaders and federal agency personnel. Productive discussions with Chairman Raul Grijlva (D-AZ), Congressmen Peter DeFazio (D-OR), and Congressman Jared Polis (D-CO), among other members of the House Natural Resources Committee, as well as meetings with Forest Service officials, provided IMBA with the opportunity to strengthen support for mountain bike access on public lands. Working in locations across the United States, IMBA Trail Solutions staff is helping shape the next generation of trails. A variety of innovative projects, including the youth- and family-friendly trails systems IMBA calls "Gateway Trails," are scheduled for completion in 2010. »
[+] Registration Open for Two IMBA Gatherings: National Bike Summit and World Mountain Bike SummitYou belong with IMBA at two important gatherings in 2010. First, the National Bike Summit runs March 9-11 and will be held in Washington, DC. Just weeks later, the IMBA World Summit will be held May 5-8 in Augusta, Georgia. Registration is now available for both events. Rebecca Rusch, three-time reining 24-Hour Solo Mountain Biking World Champion, will host a five-stop movie tour featuring Race Across The Sky, the new documentary film about one of the most intense endurance mountain bike races of all time, the Leadville Trail 100. This inspirational film has been shown in larger cities, but has not yet been seen in the core cycling communities of the Mountain West. Rusch attended the film?s premiere in New York City. That screening was intended to be a one-time only event, but after sold-out showings and multiple requests from cyclists and friends, she decided to bring the film to a select group of mountain towns. Congressman Raul Grijalva (D ? AZ), Chairman of the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands, is generating increased Congressional attention on protecting national forest lands that have been recommended for Wilderness designations. Mountain bicycling is a traditional use in many national forests. Bicyclists value these special lands for the same reasons as hikers and equestrians -- the opportunity for a healthy, low-impact recreational experience. We seek the freedom, solitude, clean air, clean water and healthy forests that bring us closer to nature. The National Park Service is looking for public input for a proposed trail network at New River Gorge, one of the premier recreational areas in the Mid Atlantic. The proposal includes the construction of two new stacked-looped mountain bike trail systems and the reclassification of certain existing trails to be open to bicycles. This has the potential of creating a network of over 100 miles of trails in the region. IMBA is a proud sponsor of the League of American Bicyclist's National Bike Summit. IMBA's presence at the summit includes sessions and workshops designed to help the mountain bike advocate lobby for public lands funding, protection and access. Join other mountain bike leaders, youth group organizers, retailers, club leaders, trailbuilders, bicycle suppliers and other leading voices as we unite for three powerful days in Washington, D.C. [+] Children In NeedA group of us riders are currently in the process of sorting out some sponsored events to raise money for the forthcoming Children in need show.
We are very much in the planning stage at the moment but are aiming to have a main event on Friday 20th November which is the night of the Children in Need show. We are planning on a fun 12 or 24hr endurance event possibly in the form of a stair ride, based in Cardiff either around the assembly or bay area.
If your not involved in the endurance event it would be great to have riders around and about in the infamous riding gear drumming up support and raising extra money.
More information will be supplied as we organise this further. It would be great to get a good number of riders involved in this and raise money for a good cause.
For now if you could show your support by joining the facebook group, you can also keep up to date with the updates as they come.
