2. English2.1 mountainbike![]() ©Brett Magnuson of Magnuson Design A while back I blogged about Geoff Baker, a mountain biker in Idaho who lobbied for a mountain bike-themed license plate. Well, according to the Lewiston Tribune, Baker acquired the needed support to make the plate possible. Gov. C.L. (Butch) Otter signed the bill and money generated by the $35 plates will help fund new trails, bridges, maintenance and more. "This is going to be a really great program that'll put Idaho's awesome bike trails on the national map and help local mountain bike clubs build new trails and take care of existing trails," Baker was quoted as saying. Would you pay to have a mountain bike-themed license plate? Comment below!
First MTB License Plate in the Nation Gets the Green Light originally appeared on About.com Mountain Biking on Friday, July 30th, 2010 at 15:06:40. Kristine Contento-Angell recently placed first in the National Mountain Biking Championships in the women aged 30-39 category. "I am pretty competitive, and I really love pushing myself physically," the 30-year-old stay at home mother of two told The Star-Ledger. Contento-Angell was in a devastating bike crash last year that left her with a broken collarbone and ribs. The accident pushed Contento-Angell to ride stronger than ever this year winning more than a handful of races in order to qualify for the national championships. "Winning, after last year, just felt so amazing and overwhelming and unbelievable," she said. Contento-Angell trained at Ringwood State Park in New Jersey to prepare for the championships in Colorado. Ringwood is very close to my old stomping grounds, and I've ridden the trails there often. And the 'Mom of the Year' Award Goes To... originally appeared on About.com Mountain Biking on Tuesday, July 27th, 2010 at 17:11:37. © Beth Puliti This article caught my eye for two main reasons. One, the subject of the story grew up where I did. Two, it involves a 67-year-old who will be mountain biking from Canada to New Mexico on the famed Continental Divide trail. The retired dentist has decided to spend the early days of his retirement touring all 2,875 miles with his son by his side. The duo estimates they'll average 30 miles a day through Montana, then 45 miles after that, with one rest day a week. I think this is truly awesome. How many 67 year olds do you know who would consider that "retirement"? If I can pedal my mountain bike 2,875 miles when I retire, you better believe I'll be doing something similar. Do you have a mountain bike trip of a lifetime planned for when you retire? Let's hear it! Comment below.
What Do Your Golden Years Look Like? originally appeared on About.com Mountain Biking on Thursday, July 22nd, 2010 at 19:41:47. It's official: the 2012 Olympic cross-country mountain bike course is underway in London! A 5.1 km loop in Essex County is being built with two technical climbs that will be separated by a valley. Welsh Minister for Heritage, Alun Ffred Jones, is disappointed the competition will be held in the flat county of Essex, a decision that has drawn criticism from many others as well. "Whilst this new course may meet the technical requirements for the competition, one thing we do have in Wales is plenty of mountains and some truly world-class mountain bike courses. This was an opportunity for LOCOG to show in a concrete way how serious they are about spreading the benefits of the 2012 Games beyond the south east of England. That opportunity has now been missed," he was quoted as saying in Bike Radar. What do you think about an Olympic mountain bike race with no mountains? Comment below!

[+] Girls, Girls, Girls!© Beth Puliti Yours truly on a mountain bike ride with the lovely ladies of White Pine Touring in Park City, Utah. This one's for the ladies. Have you ever been on a women's-only mountain bike ride? If you haven't, let me tell you what you're missing out on. Admittedly fear of the unknown frightens me--especially when the unknown involves a group of girls. My neighborhood bike shops never offered a women's mountain bike ride and I never had a group of girls to tear up the trails with. Well, fear not ladies. Riding with only women can be super fun. Try it sometime. I promise you'll like it. Here's your chance: On July 31, the Asheville Women's Cycling Club will host a Ladies First-Timers Mountain Bike Ride at 9 a.m. at the Ledford Gap parking lot at Bent Creek. Beginner and intermediate riders are welcome. The one-hour ride will be held on level gravel roads, or single-track if you wish. Go ahead and give it a try. Then report back and let me know how much you enjoyed your fella-free ride!

[+] Biking in Bear TerritoryThis story came into my inbox today and caught my attention: "Ore. cyclists survive encounter with Alaska bears." A few Portland mountain bikers survived a grizzly attack on the Resurrection Pass Trail in Alaska. They turned a blind corner and encountered a mother and two cubs. The bikers screamed, provoking the bears to advance, pounce and attack the bikers. While bear attacks like this are rare, the article got me thinking what I would do, rather what I should do, in the event I come across a bear on the trail. Especially since I just moved to an area where bears are commonly seen on and off the trail. Read this article and be prepared the next time you mountain bike in bear territory. Have you encountered a bear on the trail? Share your story!

[+] Tour Chasing© Beth Puliti This past week has been "a dream come true," in the words of my mother, who, I think, is just as excited as I am that I'm in Belgium. We started out an ocean away from the most prestigious of cycling's three "Grand Tours" and ended up mere inches away from the legendary racers. In all honesty, I wasn't sure just how stoked I'd be to cheer from the sidelines even though I'd always made an effort to watch the Tour de France from home in years past. I found out that I love Tour chasing. And fries with mayo. Sure, it's only 30 seconds of excitement when the Tour passes by--but that 30 seconds is truly exhilarating. Vive le Tour! [+] Somebody Pinch MeSo, remember a while back I asked you what your ideal biking honeymoon would be? Sure you do. Wanna know what my ideal biking honeymoon would be? Sure you do. I'd like to take in a stage of the Tour de France--in all its glory. I want to jet set to Europe, ride part of the course, then transform into one of those crazy fans you see running alongside the racers. Well, the stars happened to align this year, and I find myself in Belgium just a few blocks from tomorrow's Tour de France stage. Somebody please pinch me. I'm beyond fortunate to be able to cheer on TDF racers from the sidelines and be present when Lance Armstrong races his final Tour de France. And I don't take that for granted. So, if you're watching from home, or are lucky enough to be here too, keep an eye out for any crazy fans running next to the racers. You never know who they might be. Who do you think will win this year's Tour de France? Comment below!

[+] A Tour Divide Tragedy© Beth Puliti On June 24, the Tour Divide website updated its blog with a post titled, "In Memory of Dave Blumenthal." It read, in part:
Not a single day has passed since learning of this tragedy that I haven't thought of Dave and the wife and daughter he left behind. Just last year I, too, supported my other half's decision to attempt this very race. I know what it's like to watch this race consume your loved one--to have them pour over news articles, blog posts and photo galleries--determined to make their dream a reality. I know what it's like to watch them go on training rides...and, in some cases, ride alongside. I know what it's like to watch them study every turn, every rest area, every water stop on their cue sheets, and to watch them research, organize, painstakingly pack and weigh their gear. I know what it's like to conceal the lump in your throat and tears in your eyes when driving them to the airport. I know what it's like to lose countless hours of sleep tracking their "blue dot" on the leaderboard. But what fills my heart with gratitude and guilt is that I also know what it's like to welcome them home. And for that, my heart aches and I'm left to forever wonder why. The following comment was written on the Tour Divide blog post in Dave's memory:
I was fortunate enough to witness Dave's rainbow that night too--and I won't soon forget either one's impression.

2.2 imbaTell Congress to vote for a Land and Water Conservation Fund supported by dedicated, permanent and full funding. This moment holds great promise for mountain bikers and recreational trails. IMBA will host a new addition, the Mountain Biking Hub, in the Endurance Zone at Outdoor Retailer Summer Market, to be held at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Aug. 3-6. This fall (Oct. 1-3), IMBA and the U.S. Forest Service will host the Tahoe Trails Conference at South Lake Tahoe's Montbleu Resort and Casino. The event, which is open to all members of the mountain bike community, will create a valuable opportunity for collaboration between riders, land managers and the bike industry. The goal is to ensure the future of sustainable and enjoyable trails in the Lake Tahoe Basin, and beyond. IMBA is looking for a fulltime professional to coordinate IMBA's field programs, specifically the Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew and National Mountain Bike Patrol program. The successful candidate will have excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills. IMBA Executive Director Mike Van Abel recently coauthored an opinion piece on Colorado's pending roadless legislation. Writing for the Denver Post, Van Abel joined with Brady Robinsion, executive director of the Access Fund. Both IMBA and the Access Fund are founding members of the Outdoor Alliance. The White House Initiative on America's Great Outdoors, or AGO, is coming to a town near you, with public listening sessions slated for July and August. The topics include land conservation, outdoor recreation and public health -- topics that mountain bikers care about deeply. These sessions pose a great opportunity for mountain bikers to help shape national policies on recreation and conservation. Bicycle advocates and industry leaders from Colorado's Front Range attended a gathering with U.S. Representative Jared Polis (CO-2) yesterday. Pearl Izumi, a leading producer of sports apparel and footwear, hosted the event at the company's headquarters in Louisville, CO. Cycling legend Hans Rey gave a keynote address for the delegates at the 2010 IMBA World Summit today. The presentation spanned his career as a champion trials rider and early forays into film projects. As he described his pioneering role in the sport, dozens of projected images revealed Rey's daring and skill. "I moved away from competitions and, to satisfy my wanderlust, I began searching for places to push the boundaries of riding, or to find them," said Rey. The first day of sessions at the 2010 IMBA World Summit kicked off with a keynote address delivered by SRAM's Mike Mercuri. As Vice President of Product and Marketing, Mercuri helps lead a company that has pushed the boundaries of bicycling technology since 1987. Today, SRAM employes 2500 workers in eight nations, with an annual revenue of $480 million. Mercuri also serves as board treasurer for Bikes Belong and guides SRAM's programs to advance bicycling opportunities for people around the world. IMBA Executive Director Mike Van Abel joined President Obama for the signing of the "America?s Great Outdoors" initiative at a conference in Washington, DC on April 16. Van Abel and about 200 other executives were invited to participate in discussions led by the secretaries of the Interior and Agriculture, the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, and the chair of the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ). According to a presidential memorandum, the program aims to bring citizens from all over the United States together to, "... develop new partnerships and innovative programs to protect and restore our outdoors legacy." You should immediately bring you bike to a quick, safe controlled stop. Have your partner stop quickly as well and look at the distance between your bicycles. If you have good reflexes and reaction time the distance between your bicycles will be close. Practice braking in a variety of situations such as cornering and braking with your partner in front of you (be careful). If you are a beginner cyclist apply both brakes with even pressure. As you get more experienced apply slightly more pressure to your front brake.mountain biking womanPerforming these drills a few times per season will not help you much. You must take what you learn and apply it constantly while you are on the road. Good habits must be practiced thousands of times before they become good form.Awareness is your greatest asset when riding in traffic situations. Try to anticipate what drivers are going to do.
